Best Friend Portraits with Debbie Butler Miller
Best Friend Portraits with Debbie Butler Miller
Aug. 28 & 29
Capture your best friend forever in fabric! It’s the only quilt where a stray dog or cat hair is a good thing. In session 1 you’ll learn Debbie’s technique of applique to piece your portrait. In session 2, thread painting will bring it to life with dimension, color and shading. Photos of your furry friend must be submitted by Aug 14th, allowing time for Debbie to create your custom pattern (included in the class fee). Machine capable of free-motion is required for second class only.

Sewing machine capable of free-motion (for second class only).
Top stitching 90/14 or 80/12 needles
Mini Iron
Light box
Sharp scissors for applique cutting
Heat n Bond lite
Water Soluble Thread
Thread (for second class), this project takes several spools of thread, I prefer Poly threads. Poly threads provide a “shine to the coat” and less lint builds up in the bobbin case. But I have also been known to use whatever is needed for the project Mini Foldaway (travel cutting and pressing board) optional*

Fabric
We will be going over fabric selection in class so don’t obsess too badly over fabric choice, and I will help you select fabric in the shop. But this project can take several fabrics so look through your stash. Look at your photo carefully and select “several” fabric in different shades and tones based on your friends colors. Tone on tone and several different shades of the same color, but nothing too busy or with too much contrast unless it can be fussy cut.
For the top of your quilt you will need approx. ½ yard. Lay your picture on the fabric to audition; I prefer to select fabric that compliments the picture.
Batting: I prefer Thermor lite batting. Thermor helps prevent the fabric from shifting; it’s much easier for the needle to go through and creates less lint.
