An Elegant, Classic Border for Bed Runner, Wall Hanging and More

With a background in software engineer from my previous life (pre-motherhood and pre-quilt designer) I still love a good engineering challenge. The original design for the Heather Feather quilt included an appliquéd feather border. At 78” long, drawn completely freehand, it wasn’t conducive to ease of cutting and stitching! The challenge became to create an appliquéd feather border that would be easy to cut and stitch. It needed to have: a repeat making it easy to shorten or extend, the option of a square end or a shape that would fit into a mitered corner, and have a set of shapes that would fit onto a standard size of AccuQuilt GO! die board. Once these design challenges were met, the Heather Feather Border collection was born!

The Heather Feather Border finishes at 8” wide and has a repeat of 8”. Instructions are included to create borders with mitered corners that are 32”, 48”, 64” and 80” long. Remove the mitered corner and you have 16”, 40”, 56” and 72”. Keep adding repeats to make the border as long as you want it!

The design collection includes instructions to make a bed runner, wall hanging and mirror frame. The Heather Feather Border Bed Runner is 80” x 32”. It fits perfectly on the end of a king-sized bed (and has that aura of royalty any king or queen would demand!). The Heather Feather Border Wall Hanging (32” x 32”) features a 16” square in the middle - stitch any design of your choice in here. The wall hanging (shown) features trees from the Sparkle collection in red, green and gold to create a gorgeous piece for the Holidays. The Heather Feather Border Mirror Frame removes the center from the wall hanging and creates a frame that’s sure to be a showstopper.
